Holy Sh*t, It Happened; I Been Laid Off!

First thing: breathe.

You are not an "old fart." You are not done. You are not irrelevant. You have just been handed a shock to the system, and now it is time to flip the script. Think of yourself as the CEO of You, LLC. That means you are responsible for marketing (telling your story), sales (selling your skills), and customer success (delivering the goods once you land your next thing).

The model you grew up in rewarded loyalty and climbing the ladder. That world is gone. What exists now is messy, nonlinear, sometimes unfair, but also full of doors that can be opened. If you act with urgency, structure, and creativity, you can turn this into the best two weeks of your career reset.

Here is your 14-day playbook for rewiring your brain, protecting your health, and creating momentum:

Day 1–2: Stabilize Your Foundation

Check the money. Review essential expenses. Create a budget so you know how long your runway is. Use Mint, YNAB, or even a simple spreadsheet. Knowledge beats panic.

Secure health coverage. Do not leave a gap. Explore COBRA, Healthcare.gov, or state options. A health scare without coverage can wreck decades of savings.

Move your body. Go for a walk, hit the gym, stretch. You just took an emotional gut punch and your body needs to process it too.

Day 3–5: Own the Narrative

Rebrand yourself fast. Update your LinkedIn headline to reflect skills and aspirations, not your last title. Example: Strategic Finance Leader | Scaling Businesses | Fractional + Advisory Ready.

Write your job or consulting brief. One page max: What problems you solve, what kind of work you want next, and why you are damn good at it. This becomes your cheat sheet for every conversation.

Tell five people you trust. Former colleagues, friends, mentors. Not to complain, but to enlist them. Let them know: "I am in play. Here is what I am looking for. Here is how you can help."

Day 6–8: Build Market Presence

Hit age-friendly job boards. AARP Job Board (and if what you're thinking after you saw AARP here made you feel certain things, get over it. This is a full contact sport). Workforce50, and Seniors4Hire. Combine these with LinkedIn, Indeed, and niche boards in your industry.

Consider bridge work. Contract, freelance, or fractional roles keep income flowing and reputation alive. Upwork, Catalant, and advisory platforms are worth exploring.

Post something. Share an insight, article, or quick thought on LinkedIn. It does not have to be perfect. Consistency matters more than polish.

Day 9–11: Expand Your Reach

Book three informational calls. Former bosses, peers, even people you admire from afar. Ask: "What are you seeing in the market? Where should I point my energy?"

Join a group. Alumni organizations, industry associations, or online communities like Graymatter. Connection beats isolation.

Practice your pitch. Out loud. With a friend or even into your phone. You need muscle memory when opportunity shows up.

Day 12–14: Upskill and Futureproof

Learn a skill gap. Take one short course on Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, or Senior Planet Digital Skills. Think digital literacy, AI tools, or the latest in your discipline.

Try entrepreneurship. Even a micro-experiment. Draft a consulting package. Write a "What I Offer" one-pager. Test it with a contact.

Double down on wellness. Sleep, movement, and nutrition are not luxuries. They are the fuel for resilience. Treat them as seriously as you treat your résumé.

The Mindset Shift

Being laid off does not mean you are laid out.

You can at the same time look for a new W-2 role, explore fractional or consulting gigs, test an entrepreneurial spark, and invest in your health. That is the portfolio career model. It is less linear but often more lucrative and fulfilling.

The only thing that stops most people is inertia. You have already been forced into motion. Now choose to steer it.
